Festival Repertoire   |  Eisenstadt

For over thirty years, instrumental and vocal performers have been making a musical pilgrimage to Eisenstadt and Vienna, Austria to attend the Classical Music Festival and perform some of the greatest music ever written.  Make this year the summer for your unforgettable experience as a participant in one of Austria's longest-running and most successful summer music programs.

During the past thirty years, Festival Orchestras and Choruses have performed The Seasons, The Creation, nearly all the masses and more than a dozen symphonies by Haydn; most of the Beethoven symphonies and both his Mass in C and Missa Solenmis; the Mozart Requiem and additional major works by Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Hummel and other masters of the classical and early romantic eras.

The Classical Music Festival performs Haydn's Creation Mass as a part of a mass service in St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna.

Specialists in the performance practice and history of classical music will conduct and coach the orchestra and chorus in rehearsals and concerts. Recitals, lectures, tours and sightseeing designed to enhance participants' knowledge of Austrian culture will complement the busy two-week schedule.

At the conclusion of each year's Festival, a Haydn mass is presented during the Maria Himmelfahrt Festgottesdienst Mass at the Bergkirche.

You are invited to share in this wonderful and unique musical experience.  It will be a privilege to welcome you to the city of Joseph Haydn, and we look forward to greeting you in August in the beautifully frescoed Haydn Hall of the Esterhazy Palace.

Festival Repertoire

In 2008, the Festival continues its marvelous tradition of extraordinary performances of works from the classical period with performances of Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis and Joseph Haydn’s Lord Nelson Mass both for chorus, orchestra and soloists. The Festival Orchestra and Chorus present concerts in the Esterházy Palace in Eisenstadt, St. Stephens Cathedral in Vienna, and in other venues in Austria.

One of the most exciting features of the Festival is rehearsing and performing in the Esterházy Palace. Surrounded by the same acoustical settings which delighted Haydn, Beethoven and others, music in the Haydnsaal comes alive for today's musician.  You are certain to come away from the Festival with an increased understanding of music from the classical era.  After you return from your Austrian musical odyssey, you will notice that there is a great difference in the way you perform and listen to music, because of your experiences.

  Choral Editions

Chorus members are required to obtain their own performance choral scores. The following editions will be used by all  Festival participants.

Joseph Haydn, Lord Nelson, Bärenreiter Edition, BA 4660a

Ludwig van Beethoven, Missa Solemnis, Opus 123, Peters  Edition, Nr. 45

Chamber Music at CMF

Resident ensembles including the Kismarton Quartet, the Festival Winds and the Gold Coast Trio have performed chamber music concerts in the Empiresaal as part of the Haydn Summer Concerts produced by the Haydn Festspiele. Chamber music concerts are performed during the two weeks with personnel drawn from festival participants.  In 2008, we have scheduled two chamber music concerts and a masterclass. On Saturday, August 9, there will be a masterclass during the day and the first chamber music concert that evening. The second chamber concert is scheduled for Wednesday, August 13, at 4 p.m.

From the exhibit rooms of the Haydn house you can see the charming courtyard below.

Eisenstadt, The City of Joseph Haydn

Eisenstadt, the capital of the federal province of Burgenland since 1925, is situated on the southern slopes of the Leitha Mountains.  Surrounded by a great number of vineyards, Eisenstadt is the smallest federal capital of Austria with only 13,250 inhabitants.

The resident atmosphere of the Festival sets the program apart from the typical European "tour."  Participants live in Eisenstadt, where Haydn served the Hungarian nobility for more than thirty years.  There is an opportunity to truly get to know this quaint town which fostered the genius of Haydn, Beethoven and others.  In no time at all, participants are calling Eisenstadt their "home away from home."
